#CMWhatTheTrend - Fairy Tale Spoilers

Let's start with a quick disclaimer! When discussing spoilers, I will strictly avoid telling you which cards from the new set you should buy. Judging the power level of cards is incredibly difficult and always depends on context. Instead, let's focus on what other cards gain with the spoiled cards.

Knights

Let's not waste any time and jump right into the past week.

First up we have a big theme of Throne of Eldraine. Old tales often have Knights as protagonists and it's no different in the stories that this set tells. Between , [Circle of Loyalty], , and [Knight's Charge], it's clear that Wizards wanted to push them at least somewhere near playability in Standard. With Brawl also getting support again, many players will be looking to build casual or Commander decks around the newest tribe. And with that, players will find cards such as , , and , which are among the only Knight synergies in Magic's existence. If you're fast enough to pick some up, you might still be in time.

These only cover the casual market though. For Standard, all of this entirely depends on the viability of the Knights deck that might come to life. Nobody knows whether it will use all of Mardu's colors or if it'll only stick to two of them. That being said, it might not be the last time sees play. Maybe even some of the M20 Cavaliers are great pickups for future Standard.

Faeries

One tribe that has seen very little discussion so far is Faeries, which I find surprising. Faeries have been very popular in Magic's community. Whenever it does well in a Modern tournament, players will notice and jump to buy some and just because the archetype is so fun to play.

While we have not seen any tribal payoff in Throne of Eldraine yet, there are some potent Faeries already spoiled and I'm sure Wizards would not leave us without some reason to believe in again.

Wishclaw Talisman & Emry, Lurker of the Loch

WHAT ARE THESE CARDS?

No seriously, these cards seem incredibly powerful in the right deck. Fortunately for them, a deck with lots of artifacts is already on the rise in Modern.

The deck in Modern can beautifully utilize both of these cards. Recurring and other artifacts is very powerful (the deck already plays ). Maybe Urza decks will need to adjust to play some more artifacts to sacrifice, in order to utilize this one mana 1/2 that taps to sort of draw a card.

You could also just go infinite on turn two by deploying the new Wizard on turn one alongside , a and another artifact. If you follow it up with a the next turn, you can sacrifice the Bauble only to recast it by tapping Emry, which untaps Emry. This way, you can draw any number of cards during the next upkeep and also lets you attack with a very large Emry.

As for the Talisman, just to give you some ideas, I'd suggest you try bouncing it with after tutoring. Alternatively, you could use your to sacrifice your Talisman in response to the Talisman's ability. What remains to be seen is whether or not a three mana with some additional requirements is strong enough for the new Modern.

The Implications of Spoiler Season

Spoiler season is always exciting. At the same time, it's easy to get caught up in that excitement (in the end, that's what spoiler season is intended to do). So, try to keep an objective eye on those new cards and especially keep an eye out for already released cards that work with new ones in distinct and powerful ways. In the end, those are the cards that have a lot of potential, since the new cards are likely still overpriced during pre-sale.

For now, we'll see what the rest of Throne of Eldraine has in store for us.
