Daily D&D Deck Tech: Pauper Soul Sisters

Every workday ahead of the set's paper release, Insight takes a quick look at a deck featuring cards from Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. Today we gain a lot of life and attack our opponent with a swarm of small creatures getting pumped up—or with one big and chunky Unicorn.

Soul Sisters is an archetype perpetually stuck somewhere back in the heads of Pauper players. The addition of (a more costly version of which this deck always wanted) and have again revived the idea. Their inclusion ended in a successful run through this unpleasant and oppressive metagame full of Affinity and Squirrel Storm.

The deck is built around three creatures that gain you life whenever a creature enters the battlefield ( and ) under your control (). Together with card advantage in the form of , , and now the new Priest, you will rarely ever run out of gas.

The constant resupply and life gain should ensure you have enough time to make an army of creatures waiting to be buffed by . Alternatively, just attack with one powerful and have give it protection from your opponent's blockers.

The Soul Sisters deck isn't going to break the meta. But its recent results in Leagues and a Challenge proved that it can pick a fight with the two bogeymen of current Pauper—Affinity and Squirrel Storm. Gaining huge amounts of life and can be problematic for Storm if they don't manage to take us down quickly. Against Affinity we have a great sideboard plan in and other artifact hate, while a fast-growing Unicorn can trade with a fat . Life gain gets us out of range from on our face.

To sum up, Adventures in the Forgotten Realms gave Soul Sisters the new toys the deck always wanted. It is refreshing to see something new in a format that's become a little bit dull after the release of Modern Horizons 2. I would love to see the archetype compete in a more healthy meta, after upcoming bans which I wish will happen soon!
