Every workday while the Streets of Capenna are new, Insight takes a quick look at another deck featuring the fresh cards! Ever since Cat and Oven, black and red sacrifice shells have been playable in almost all the formats. Now they've received a substantial boost in Ob Nixilis, the Adversary!
Let's start with the main engine— and . The Cat drains the opponent when it enters the battlefield and the Oven can sacrifice the Cat to create a Food token, which then can be used to bring back the Cat and drain again. The final outcome is that every turn, for every Oven, you can go through one iteration of this loop, which in longer games can spell doom for opponents who cannot get rid of the artifact. If you're already sacrificing Cats and Food tokens left and right, you might as well add to the mix and have that extra reach and interaction baked into every action. And to further capitalize on that engine we've got the Kamigawa specials and .
With its linear gameplan, the deck still has got strong interaction elements. Alongside the aforementioned Devil pings for 1 damage, it runs quadruple . Note that with all the sacrificing going on, turning on revolt is rather trivial. A pair of act as efficient catch-alls, which can either be deployed as soon as turn one or on the key turn before the opponent would ordinarily do their big thing. There is one additional tool at this deck's disposal to combat opposing removal—. It acts as ramp but also card advantage when used on a soon-to-be-destroyed creature. Last but not least, it's another sacrifice to trigger the Devil—or two when counting the Trasure.
The new has given the deck another angle of attack and a robust early and midgame. In the early turns we can go , sac it to Ob to make a copy with three loyalty already, and have a Blood token leftover. Later in the game, there could be quasi-combo turns with Ob's pinging Devils and the main itself, at which point each sacrifice deals 2 damage. It adds up real fast.
