Daily Dominaria Deck Tech: The Path of Prowess

Every workday while the set is new, Insight is taking a quick look at one deck featuring the latest additions from Dominaria United. The most explosive aggro deck in the Modern format is showing up again, up on top, and it is taking a new path. Read ahead to find out what Prowess is up to now!

Next to Burn, Prowess is the classic aggressive red archetype of Modern. It is more reliant on creatures, but they, in turn, can yield outrageous amounts of damage, quickly, compared to Burn's more steady cooking. The deck runs sixteen creatures, sometimes even more. , , and are powerful beaters, and allows us to squeeze more value out of our many cheap spells. Each has its upsides and downsides. The Mage can shrink opposing creatures, the Swiftspear has haste, and the Dragon has permanent prowess, evasion, haste, but it's also the most expensive threat—twice as expensive as the other creatures!

In order to enable the namesake prowess, we need proper spells. shines like in no other deck, as this one gets full use of the spell being cast twice. With multiple creatures, Dart contributes substantially to the raw damage output. serves multiple roles: It's a free spell, it increases damage, it acts as our against . We are not short on card advantage either. and its little brother are both represented. If the opponent can stump your early pressure, you can easily rebuild.

The angle I like the most about the deck is , which merely serves the deck as a "fair"card advantage engine. There is no combo here—unless you count recasting three s as combo. A new card bolsters this plan further. is essentially free up front when you cast Iteration or Impulse off it, the mill part helps your future Breaches, and the last chapter recasts a burn spell or reiterates what you've cast with the first chapter.
