Every workday throughout the preview season for Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, Insight is taking a quick look at one new deck featuring the latest cards from the upcoming set. One card in particular has already cemented itself as a multi-format, multi-deck staple. But one Modern deck might benefit the most.
If someone asks you which decks will contain , you might say: "Definitely more than ." The list of green decks that won't run it is probably shorter than the list of decks that will.
These two trees don't have much in common besides their name. The new Boseiju is more like a mix between and . It combines the best of both worlds of these cards. It has the flexibility of Trophy, hitting artifacts, enchantments, and even nonbasic lands, while being a land itself. This is probably its biggest upside. A land that moonlights as a multi-type removal spell, does not enter the battlefield tapped, and produces colored mana is simply unheard of.
This tree will stretch out its branches into probably every format it is legal in. I want to list a few decks that come to my mind at first glance and take a closer look at one afterward. Don't mind me if I miss a deck. This card just fits so many. (Modern Jund) will love getting Boseiju back to your hand. Modern and Legacy Elves will love hugging the tree also. A green and white Death and Taxes variant with will make a nice fit too. Modern Amulet Titan players will cherish the tree for destroying , for their ability to search it into hand/play and to bounce it with . Legacy Reanimator sometimes splashes green for to work against . Boseiju could prove a more flexible new choice, because it's uncounterable and able to hit artifacts as well. The format's Lands strategy will quickly run opponents out of all mana-producing lands … et cetera.
Tron players will live in fear of it. In Vintage gets a new enemy, as do the landless Belcher and "Oops, All Spells" decks of Modern. Being legendary and limited to a single color means that few people will run a playset, but a lot of decks can safely include a couple.
Boseiju will obviously be a great match with in Modern and Legacy. Maybe it is able to breathe (un-) life into Modern Dredge. Dredge is extremely vulnerable to sideboard hate—some of which appears increasingly often in main decks now thanks to . So it's only fair that Dredge should get a maindeckable answer. Boseiju indeed answers most graveyard hate pieces, for example , , , , and . Once these permanents enter the field (and in the case of Relic/Spellbomb sit ready to be activated) Dredge basically cannot do its thing. With Boseiju in the mix, only remains problematic.
To get maximum use out of Boseiju, even could make its debut in the deck.
