Every workday while the set is new, Insight is taking a quick look at another deck featuring cards from Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. Legacy Death and Taxes has already adopted Yorion as its companion. The Modern version now follows suit with some fresh additions from the land of channeling lands.
Death and Taxes has been in and out of the Modern metagame with its different iterations over the years: monowhite, White-Black Eldrazi, green-white, Stoneblade … The player who goes by the name Parrit on Magic Online has decided to dust off the good old white creatures and made the Top 8 at a Modern Premier.
The core is exactly what you'd expect: and its best friend , assisted by and . As it's an 80-card Yorion shell, one was able to expand the Stoneforge package. It now cosists of , , , … and Neon Dynasty has brought another piece of Equipment to be used in such a deck: . As a lot of players have noticed, it's basically a stoneforgeable . It also provides the option to equip a different creature and make it bigger. In short, having a tutorable creature and main-deck access to graveyard hate is a pretty strong option.
Recent years have also been kind to white in general. and gave this creature deck access to absurdly strong removal, and and further pushed its taxation aspect. And then there's . It can be compared to , which does not see a lot of Modern play because it allows the opponent to find a land replacement. The same is true—but worse!—for Boseiju's effect. Enter . Its anti-search static has annoyed generations of players across history, and now we're back at it. To get the most out of it, the latest Hatebears incarnation runs not just quadruple but also a playset of Bosejiu. Maybe some players are bitter, but the Arbiter is back!
