Daily Dynasty Deck Tech: Jin Joins Commander Memnarch
Every workday throughout the preview season for Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, Insight is taking a quick look at one new deck featuring the latest cards from the upcoming set. Today it's time to update our monoblue artifact Commander deck with a bunch of tools from the future!
Jin-Gitaxias is back with a brand new card! copies artifacts, instants, and sorceries we cast. This new version of the Praetor got me excited to build a new monoblue artifact-themed Commander deck. However, as this card also counters the first spell cast by our opponents, I decided against using it as commander. This would lead to a lot of unfun moments, with players being so scared of Jin sitting in the command zone that they would probably see me as archenemy from turn zero. I resolved to build a new version of a deck instead.
In fact here's a general disclaimer: The following is designed for a casual playgroup with fair gameplay in mind. There are ways to make infinite mana, but the list omits the usual powerful blue cards such as , , , , eschews tutors (except for ) and even . I also purposely avoided the combo of plus . Of course the addition of these cards would definitely increase the power level of the deck, and if your playgroup agrees to it, you can definitely swap out Memnarch for Jin. On the other hand, if you want to power down the deck even more, you can switch Memnarch for the new card , which generates value while sitting inconspicuous on the battlefield or attached to any of your creatures.
Neon Dynasty also contains a new card for one of my favorite planeswalkers: . Tezzeret's static ability reduces the first activation of any artifact ability we activate each turn by two mana. Indeed, this was the impetus that got me thinking of Memnarch again in the first place. The deck's main goal is to try and ramp with mana rocks as much as possible since our commander costs seven mana to cast. In the meantime, we should try to assemble the pieces to one of our combos, either using the and combo to generate infinite blue mana or having in play with to go infinite with colorless mana.
Winning the game is achieved either by stealing our opponents' permanents with Memnarch when we get an infinite amount of blue mana; or by killing one player at a time with and infinite colorless mana. Alternatively, we can even animate our noncreature artifacts with to overrun our opponents. We also run , whose Phyrexian side helps us dig through our deck and possibly becomes another win condition later. Since we are on the topic of Phyrexia, we can even include the thematic for flavor reasons, which can be a useful removal spell similar to with the potential to lock out someone's commander at instant speed.
