MOM's Daily Deck Tech: Rona, Helix of Ascendancy

We take a quick look at a deck featuring the latest additions from March of the Machine every workday throughout the rest of April. Jeskai Ascendancy is a highly combo-genic card that Pioneer players have long been trying hard to break for good. With the new Rona it might finally happen!

just screams "combo." If you can keep casting noncreature spells, you'll get to grow your entire board and cycle a card every time. Many Ascendancy decks run green creatures that produce mana so that you can keep playing spells off the mana the creature generates while untapping it and adding more. However, the time is ripe to take a different angle. We want to keep casting the same zero-mana spell over and over again.

With Ascendancy on the battlefield, you play on a creature you control, so now it can tap to bounce any nonland permanent. This permanent ideally is . When you pick up Mox and recast it, you trigger Ascendancy, get a loot, and untap creatures, including the one that has the Helix ability. You use the creature again to bounce the Mox. Rinse and repeat. The outcome is that you've gone through as many cards in the deck as you'd like and all your creatures are of massive size, capable of smashing in for lethal. If one of these creatures is legendary, you can also generate any amount of mana of the corresponding color. If one of them is an active , your attackers won't be blocked either.

is a key competent of the deck as it allows you to replay Mox from the graveyard instead. When you have two Moxen, you don't need for endless mana/loot/+1/+1. Just Ascendancy and and active Emry are enough.

With March of the Machine we get a new blue legend that mirrors Emry—in the inverted kind of way typical of mirrors. has an untap ability itself, which means you no longer need Ascendancy to make a big move! Just Rona, Helix, and Mox are enough to fill an infinity pool with blue mana. Several cards that you want to run anyway can make use of this. Most notably, you can replay over and over to stack your whole library, draw into a pair of , and probably piece together a win from there.

As if that weren't enough, Rona also has a loot ability that will be useful while setting up for the combo turn. It's an excellent addition to the shell, extending the number of possible combinations substantially.
