ONE Daily Deck Tech: The Perfected Mill

Every workday while the set is new, Insight takes a quick look at a deck featuring the latest additions from Phyrexia: All Will Be One. Already a well-established part of the Modern metagame, it seems Mill got a substantial upgrade in Jace, the Perfected Mind, with full playsets present in many main decks.

Mill is an archetype thanks to which Magic even got a new keyword. We used to just put cards from the top of the library into the graveyard and now we mill them. Predictably, the whole strategy revolves around putting cards from the opponent's library into the grave until zero remain. The win then comes from the fact that the opponent would have to take a draw from an empty deck, which, according to the rules of Magic, results in an immediate loss.

Like in Burn where the best recurring sources of damage are creatures, in Mill the best repeatable mill effects come from eight Crabs. and are the absolute best starts, especially in a deck with fetch lands. A single will allow you to mill the opponent for six cards. The more Crabs you've got, the better each fetch land gets. Mill is also one of the few decks that still play , as it is similar in function.

With Phyrexia: All Will Be One, this strategy got a massive boost in . The first ability allows him to defend himself, which is the least sexy of the things Jace can do. The −2 is essentially on a stick. If you play Jace for full retail cost, you will be able to use this ability twice and he will still stay on the field! The very floor of this walker is milling the opponent for nine or fifteen, which is already good enough for this specific strategy.

If you are a fan of attacking from a different angle, this deck is for you. The compleated Jace might just be the best Jace in Modern right now.
