Daily Deck Tech of Eldraine: Legacy's Beanstalk Control

WOE is upon us! Every workday while the set is new, Insight takes a quick look at a deck featuring the latest additions from Wilds of Eldraine. Jack exchanged his cow for magic beans and retrieved countless treasures. In Magic going Up the Beanstalk will give you plenty of victories too!

Control decks want to answer as many of the opponent's key cards until they stabilize and win with some planeswalker or bomb spell like or just the usual . Uro already provides a crucial element in the early turns and turns into a powerful beater once escaped. With the addition of cards like and , control decks fell on hard times. Frequently you'd feel as if you were a turn behind even on the play. However, things are changing because of .

At one colorless and one green mana and triggering on five-mana spells, the card may look subpar, even if you consider the cantrip effect. But it is surprisingly good in control decks, maybe even too much! Because of Uro, these decks were favoring a green splash and using cards like and/or already. Beanstalk cantrips like a Snake without body and is a draw engine without the life cost of the Library. Granted, it takes some time, but once the beans are sown, you won't miss neither deathtouch nor the early extra draws.

Counting the companion, , which can even blink the Beanstalk, you have close to twenty spells with mana value 5 or higher to trigger the draw, and a bunch of them can be cast for cheap: , , and, of course, . Have you ever imagined this counter would be card neutral? It can even generate card advantage if you have multiple copies of Beanstalk!

Playing on your opponent's turn gets considerably better once you resolve the enchantment. You can do things like evoke a Solitude to trigger the Beanstalk and dig for a blue card if you are pressured into casting Force of Will. You can use any of those spells to draw the Terminus carefully placed at the top with the other turn. For such a seemingly innocuous enchantment, really offers a lot to any control deck!
