Daily Deck Tech of Eldraine: Long Live the King

WOE is upon us! Every workday while the set is new, Insight takes a quick look at a deck featuring the latest additions from Wilds of Eldraine. Unlike Rowan, Will embraces a peaceful use of power. This commander's cost reduction abillity is all about the amount of life gained during the turn.

Access to white and blue spells means we will not have any difficulties to gain life. Azorius strategies are well known for incorporating life gain, sometimes even by accident. As a result, the goal of this commander is simple: Gain life and cast haymakers for a fraction of their original cost to win the game. This can be achieved in various ways. We can either focus on control, trying to outvalue our opponents, or we can use signature white or blue spells to beat down our opponents before they have a chance to react.

To enable we can run a "soul sisters" package of , , , and . These are all cheap creatures to be cast early that will incrementally gain life. With this deck we have to look at cheap life gain as rituals. Cards like , , , and are perfect examples. offers a strategic choice during the draw step. By substituting the draw with gaining 5 life, we can optimize a turn where the five mana cost reduction becomes crucial for casting a significant and impactful spell. Additionally we can use support cards like and to help us draw, ramp, and even gain life.

Each instance of life gain helps us generate an absurd amount of cost reduction, which we can use to fuel X spells such as , , or ; or help us cast highly impactful spells early such as , , , and . can close out the game in a combo with .

Furthermore, we are able to employ doubling effects to make our life gain do double duty. and are powerhouses in this deck as they also serve as mana doublers when Will is on the battlefield. Since we will be gaining so much life, we might as well use that for card advantage with the or to kill our opponents outright with .
