Daily Deck Tech of Eldraine: Yawgmoth's Cauldron

WOE is upon us! Every workday while the set is new, Insight takes a quick look at a deck featuring the latest additions from Wilds of Eldraine. Modern's Yawgmoth combo needs no introduction, but what if Young Wolf could execute the loop without the need for Yawgmoth on the battlefield? A certain Cauldron can help!

Black-Green Yawgmoth is a creature deck with a combo baked in. allows you to sacrifice a creature to draw a card and place a −1/−1 counter somewhere. The twist is that you can use this effect to beneficially put these counters on your own threats. When comes back with a +1/+1 counter thanks to undying, you can sacrifice a different creature, put a −1/−1 on the Wolf, hence resetting it. With two Wolves, you can keep sacrificing and resetting one another, drawing a card on every iteration. You'd eventually run out of life, but allows you to win on the spot.

You also have a fair plan that can go toe to toe with opposing strategies. is a relatively new addition that disrupts but also generates two bodies for . amasses an army of Insects and leverages our redundant tokens and undead threats to kill off whatever the opponent presents. Yawgmoth itself can also use the −1/−1 ability to diminish the opposing army and then proliferate to build one's own , all while refilling the hand.

Wilds of Eldraine brought an interesting toy to the shell that offers redundancy against removal. can exile Grist or Yawgmoth from the graveyard, granting any of your creatures their abilities! Suddenly creates Insects, or executes the loop, all thanks to Cauldron. Notably, all of these activated abilities work on creatures that are summoning sick and on all creatures with a +1/+1 counter, whether they got it from the Cauldron or by undying or amassing Orcs. Just note that using Grist's minus abilities this way requires a creature to have gained enough loyalty counters via the +1 first. In some matchups, the artifact even makes a great piece of incidental graveyard hate, like against or Rakdos Evoke!
