Generic Cards to Pick Up from Age of Overlord

Age of Overlord is upon us and offers a ton of powerful tools that everyone seems to be after! This article specifically focuses on the top generic cards of the set. Some of them have had a major impact on the playing field right away. Others are merely good to have. Let's see what's what!

1. S:P Little Knight

This is both the best card in the set and the best link two monster we have ever received, which does say a lot when you compare it to cards such as and . has very accessible summoning materials. It just needs two effect monsters, which are easy to obtain in today's playing environment.

It has two incredible effects; the first kicks in when it is link summoned using one or two extra deck monsters as material. If so, Little Knight gets to target one card on the field or in either graveyard, and banish it. This very decent effect lets you get rid of a problematic card on the field, but it comes at the cost of stopping you from attacking directly this turn. Also, you can summon Little Knight during your opponent's turn using to interrupt your opponent's plays.

Its second effect is also incredible: When your opponent activates any card effect, you can target two monsters on the field, and banish them until the end phase. The funny thing is that you can use Little Knight to dodge cards like or . The card is incredibly strong and deserves a spot in every extra deck. Granted, it is very expensive, but can make the difference between winning and losing a game.

2. Super Starslayer TY-PHON - Sky Crisis

I actually dare you to say this card's name three times in a row quickly. , regardless of its ridiculous name, is an amazing card. We can also call it the anti- due to its effect. Theoretically, it needs two level twelve monsters to be summoned, but almost no one will be using this method. Alternatively, if your opponent summons two or more monsters from the extra deck, either during this or the previous turn, you can summon this card by using the monster with the highest attack under your control as material. However, you will get locked out of any other summons for the rest of this turn.

Once it hits the field, neither player can activate the effects of monsters with 3,000 attack or more, making this a great counter for cards such as and . So now everyone has an easily-summoned generic monster that can shut down big monsters your opponent controls. By the way, be careful when playing this card in Dark World as it is a fiend monster, and will increase its attack, resulting in its effects being negated, which then makes you unable to use its second effect. Otherwise, the second effect allows you to detach one material from that card to bounce back a monster from anywhere on the field to the hand.

This card is so incredible and absolutely generic, it would be a crime not to include it in your extra deck.

3. Gen and Ken

Two pods in a pea, friends in arms, fraternal twins. Whatever you want to call them, and are cards you certainly want to pick up. Both are warrior monsters, making them searchable with . Both share an inverted effect: Once per turn, during your main phase, if you control Ken, you can summon Gen from your hand or deck in defense position to your opponent's field. If you control Gen instead, you can similarly special summon Ken.

In general, it isn’t always the best idea to give your opponent monsters. However, both Gen and Ken trigger when summoned by the other‘s effect. Gen forces your opponent to discard a card from their hand while Ken allows you to draw two cards, then discard one from hand to graveyard. At the end of the battle phase, they return to your hand. The cards are so generic that they can be played in almost any deck. If you don’t need to normal summon, you can use them to gain an advantage, yet you can also special summon them using a pendulum summon or with the effect of . Dark World is the deck that would probably benefit most from these two cards, but they’re worthy to be experimented with in many others.

4. Full Armored Dark Knight Lancer

A card with an epic name, is a new generic xyz monster with 2,800 attack. It needs three level seven monsters as materials, but can also be xyz summoned using either a rank five or a rank six monster on your field instead, which seems way more convenient. It also gains 300 attack for each material attached to it, meaning that Lancer, by default, has a minimum of 3,100 attack, making it bigger than most monsters your opponent would be controlling.

Once per turn, you can target any xyz card in your graveyard and add it to your hand. Your options include—but are not limited to— and to help you get rid of some problematic cards, or in order to revive Lancer once more. You can also recycle back to your extra deck some xyz dragon monsters, or if you are playing a fish deck, you can add instead. Its last effect allows you to attach a monster your opponent controls to itself once a monster you control is equipped with a spell card. For example, you can banish from you graveyard to equip an xyz monster from your grave to Lancer, thus triggering this effect.

In my opinion, it’s a nice card that needs to be played in tandem with the new xyz armor monsters in the set. It will take a lot of players by surprise and might win you some games.

5. Burning Dragon

Say hello to your new . Wait, I mean . In fact, this is a mixture of both, to some extent. is a big beatstick with 2,500 attack that can be special summoned from the hand if your opponent controls two monsters. By discarding a spell card, you can destroy all spell and trap cards on the field, including your own.

First of all, Dragon Link decks would at least side a copy because of how useful the card is to them. Whether destroying your own backrow ends up being beneficial entirely depends on the deck you are playing. Overall, against backrow-heavy decks, this card can put in some work to either clear your opponent's backrow or to have them pre-emptively use them.

It’s a straightforward card that is very effective and definitely deserves a second glance from players.
