For something completely different, here's an almost outrageous way to win at Magic, from the deepest recesses of the annals of the game: There once was a combo deck that involved multiple copies of , , and . Its goal was to turn at least two of the opponent's permanents black, cast Reap, crack a Diamond for three mana in response, and then return another Reap and another Diamond to hand. This loop could be done over and over, generating one mana each time, eventually returning and killing the opponent.

However, if you were the opponent and knew what was going on, you could win with a very simple move: Take a couple of mulligans to ensure your library was bigger and then never play a single card, not even lands. If you didn't have a permanent to be turned black, the infamous "Reaplace" deck just couldn't win, at least not without sideboarding.

The same trick worked against some versions of "Ankh Tide" as well. This deck employed and to exile five of your lands and return them on the next upkeep for 10 damage. It only needed one of either Ankh or Tide and two of the other to deal 20 damage this way. However, if you never played a land, the Ankh could never deal any damage at all.
