We continue to explore The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. The new discover mechanic, a baby brother to cascade, already took over Pioneer, and it was bound to show its strength in Modern as well. Here's the same idea, same combo, but with much stronger cards to support it and to circumvent the mana restrictions!
Let's address the combo in question. is a four-drop creature that discovers 3 upon entry, which essentially works like cascade. However, this one triggers not on cast but as an enter-the-battlefield effect, which meaningfully changes play patterns. Thanks to the creature being in play when it triggers, you can flip into and cast or , copy Appraiser, get another trigger, and keep going. At some point, you'll be able to give the team haste with and smash in for lethal.
Since we're playing Modern, we can jam multiple powerful spells that go along with the discover restriction. is a classic early interaction piece that doubles as a game-ending threat in the later stages. With Mimic and Phantasmal Image you've got the option to copy such a Fury and wreak havoc on the opponent's board. also bolsters our Elemental department, offering on-stack interaction against , , or . They both allow us to stay on a linear course but also remain interactive.
allows us to go for the combo or a threat like Fury. It comes particularly handy postboard where you the unsuspecting opponent. is a necessary addition when you play so many colors already, acting as a catch-all. Switching into a pseudo control deck is a real possibility. If you want to attack your local metagame from a completely different angle, sleeve up some Ixalan uncommons and go to town!
