Getting into a new TCG game can be a huge undertaking, especially if that game is Yu-Gi-Oh!. Today Taylor and Leoni sit down to give you their best tips for how to start playing Yu-Gi-Oh! in 2024, and what you can expect from the game and community.

Yu-Gi-Oh! has been around for a long time now, but don't let that discourage you. Whether you're an old-school fan of the anime who wants to break into the modern game or a brand-new player who has never touched a card, there's plenty of great ways to get you started in the wonderful world of Yu-Gi-Oh!.
Try the Game Out with Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel
Master Duel is Yu-Gi-Oh!'s official online client, and you can find it to download pretty much anywhere you play games (PC, consoles, and even phones!). Master Duel is a great way to learn everything in Yu-Gi-Oh!: From the very basics all the way up to complex strategies and interactions. It has a lengthy tutorial mode and solo missions that you can really spend a lot of time with until you feel comfortable enough to play against real players. Oh, and did we mention it is completely free to play? If there's a single thought in your head about maybe being interested in playing Yu-Gi-Oh!, Master Duel is the simplest and most cost-effective way to give the game a try! It has a great visual style with flashy effects and awesome music and will even give you reminders about effects you can use by showing glowing cards.
I Like Playing Master Duel! Now What?
Master Duel is a great way to get games of Yu-Gi-Oh! in anytime and anywhere, but it does have some drawbacks. First of all, card games are an inherently social experience that playing online does not replicate. Going to a card shop and having someone sit across the table from you who you can talk and enjoy the game with is one of the best parts of any card game, and Master Duel obviously can't supply you with that. We encourage everyone who likes Master Duel to try to transition to the main tabletop TCG, so you can make friends and become a part of the community in your area. It'll likely make you enjoy the game a lot more!
Worth noting, the pool of cards legal to use in your deck isn't actually the same in the real-life TCG as the one on Master Duel. Master Duel uses a mixed Forbidden & Limited List, combining some aspects of the Japanese (Yu-Gi-Oh! OCG) Forbidden & Limited List and the western TCG Forbidden & Limited List. This can be a bit confusing for people who want to transition to the paper game, so we wanted to make sure we mention it here. You can check what cards are currently on the Forbidden & Limited list on Konami's website.
How Do I Get Yu-Gi-Oh! Cards in Real Life?
Yu-Gi-Oh! can get expensive quickly if you don't know what you want or need. As a new player, we're going to start off with good but cheap options to help keep the cost of investment low. For any new players we will always recommend finding a Structure Deck you think looks fun and buying three copies of it. The reason you buy three of them and not just one is because the strongest cards usually only have one copy in the deck. By buying three you can get a playset of all the strongest cards.
The best Structure Deck to buy currently may be Fire Kings, which features the relatively strong fire archetype and a few staples that can be used in pretty much any deck you want in the future, like

So now that you have your cards, all that is left to do is find a place to play! Luckily, Konami once again has you covered, and you can find all the Official Tournament Stores in your area by using the Official Tournament Store Locator. Don't be discouraged if you go to a store and don't seem to get along with the people there either: Every store is different and has communities that can cover a wide range of personalities and backgrounds, so don't be afraid to check out a couple different stores near you and see which one suits you best!
Final Thoughts
Yu-Gi-Oh! is a game that gets a bad rep for being overly complicated and hard to get into, but we think it is worth it if you're willing to give it a try. The learning experience will take awhile, but by the time you reach the highs of breaking through an opponent's unstoppable strategy to clutch out a win from the jaws of defeat, you'll understand that Yu-Gi-Oh! can make you feel emotions that few other games can.
