Yu-Gi-Oh! certainly has some strange cards in its catalog, and we're putting Eilidh and Olivia from popular Magic: The Gathering channel EDHijinks to the test! Taylor has cooked up a quiz for non-Yu-Gi-Oh! players around the world, so play along at home to test your knowledge of banned, fake, or otherwise ridiculously named Yu-Gi-Oh! cards.
Our Bonus Picks for Ridiculous Card Names
Anything is possible in the world of Yu-Gi-Oh!: You can find cards with mythical creatures like dragons and goblins, science fiction tropes like giant robots and advanced alien technology, or otherwise ridiculous concepts like a living washing machine or an evil donut come to life. Let's focus on the latter. Here are our picks for the most ridiculous cards (and names) in all of Yu-Gi-Oh! history.
When talking about ridiculous card names, always comes to mind. The fact that Konami chose words like "purply" to describe a dragon from space is funny enough, but deciding to make all of these adjectives connected as one long word that looks like someone randomly pounded on their keyboard is the icing on the "purplythorny" cake.
is a card that is as conceptually ridiculous as its gameplay effect is entirely useless. We have no way to tell if this Donut was living a normal doughy life before it was possessed by a demon, or if it was intentionally produced in the world's most sinister bakery. But either way, we certainly wouldn't be happy to see this guy staring up at us from a plate in a café.
Now that is one evil groundhog … well, not really. Despite its name, doesn't exactly give the impression that it is plotting and scheming for our untimely demise. Nefarious is a pretty strong word to use for something this innocent looking, even if it will apparently try to kill you by chucking acorns at your head. Out of all the demons and devils in Yu-Gi-Oh!, this flying unicorn-beaver-wannabe may deserve the "Nefarious" moniker the least.
But wait, there's more! Let's crank that nefariousness up to eleven! doubles down on the ridiculous name by doing two things: First it manages to use "Nefarious" twice, somehow, but also … how do you eat nefariousness? It definitely does come off as a more evil version of the Marmot now, but we're not sure whether the upgrade in nefariousness was worth the massive eye roll from every Yu-Gi-Oh! player around the globe.
