Top 5: Cards to Buy, Sell, or Hold in October 2023

Magic hasn't changed too much over the past month, while we sit through endless previews. But decks evolve even without new material. Different cards see play and in different quantities, which in turn affects the demand for them. Let's take a look at the hottest pickups for October!

Hold/Sell: The One Ring

has been spoken about a lot. While the hype seems to have died down, its presence in Eternal format has not waned. Though the price looked to have stabilized at around €50–€60 some time back, it has been fluctuating recently and even approached €70 at times!

replaced the Ring in some grindy shells, but control mages have not stopped innovating. The twelfth place in Sofia by Jędrzej Szmyd, also known as TSPJedrek on Magic Online, proves that The One Ring can still effectively compete and find new decks in Modern.

That is to say, if you haven't bought your Rings yet, I'd wait on the move a bit. The card is at its peak compared to the last few weeks.

Hold/Sell: Agatha's Soul Cauldron

I covered last time, and I purposefully want to come back to it. It was a surprise post-Eldraine and exceeded everyone's expectations, both in power level and price. However, it didn't stop there.

The card cost around €30 back in September, and it is now aiming for €40! It does fluctuate a fair bit, but the overall trend is up. The card proved its strength in Modern in particular, where three copies are now the norm in one of the most popular decks of the format.

People keep finding more combos with the card, and the popularity of the decks playing it increases as well. I would be genuinely surprised if the card dropped below €30.

Sell: Questing Druid // Seek the Beast

I don't think anyone expected this one to be on the list, but here we are. Andrea Mengucci hyped up a version of Izzet Murktide that drops completely and replaces it with replaces it as a card-advantage-and-threat split card. It doubled in price thanks to Mengucci's Day 2 finish at LMS Sofia, and the hype continues.

While a change from €2.50 to €5 is not staggering, if you've been sitting on a couple of playsets, it's the best time to liquidate them. Maybe you can even still snag some pre-hype copies and arbitrage them for monetary gains. Foil copies also increased heavily from around €3 to now even €7.

As far as I am concerned, the best strategy here is to sell off all copies and wait for the hype to die down. It's possible you'll be able to restock for your personal needs at a lower price later.

Buy: Lórien Revealed

is a similar case to from last time, where I recommended buying it specifically in foil. It's a staple in Modern across multiple decks and also sees Legacy play. It's going to be tough to push the card out completely thanks to its unique effect.

While commons are usually not a good buy-out target, foils are much rarer to come by. Sitting at €7, I would purchase it with the intention of holding it properly for the long term, at least as long as The Lord of the Rings: Tales of the Middle-earth is purchasable. You want to wait it out.

Buy: Fiery Islet

This is easily the best time to pick up this widely played blue-red canopy land. hasn't been the most expensive card anyway, but thanks to Universes Beyond: Doctor Who the price is criminally low now. At €2 a piece, I would happily restock to have at least a playset available.

The original foil printing is a bit of a different story, sitting at €30. While the price flinched and went down from €40, I don't think it will drop much further beyond that.
