Every workday ahead of the set's paper release, Insight takes a quick look at a deck featuring cards from Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. Demilich goes best in shells adept at slinging spells. There is another card that loves that—Arclight Phoenix. Let's see how the two pair up!
Ever since the banhammer hit , players have wanted to bring back , pun intended, albeit with middling success. Then we got , which gave us all hope.
The deck slings spells like crazy. Between all the cantrips, neutral on both mana and cards, amounting to two spells in one, and 's second half essentially free, we're able to bring back the Birds easily as soon as turn three. Our typical pattern will include turn two Salvaging ditching a Phoenix and turn three free Salvaging plus any two spells.
Conveniently enough, the aforementioned play pattern works great in tandem with a new card from Adventures in the Forgotten Realms—. On such a turn three where we cast three to four spells, we'll be able to both return Phoenix(es) and play Demilich. It gives off definite vibes. It's super synergistic that we can get both payoffs from the same setup.
In addition, and are resilient to removal. Hardly anybody plays anymore, they're all but immune to , and if they leave the battlefield, they'll most likely end up in the graveyard—at which point we're good to go again. Demilich comes back under a simple-enough-to-meet condition in our deck, namely spells in the graveyard, while Phoenix looks at spells cast. You're slinging spells, drawing cards, and the nice by-product is getting free, recursive threats.
