Every Thursday Insight is taking a quick look at one of the top-performing, most peculiar, or simply sweetest Modern decks among recent results. With all the rage around reanimating Atraxa, Grand Unifier, some players prefer cheating Portal to Phyrexia into play. Welcome to Monored Reanimator!
Let's begin by addressing the portal in the room. The main game plan of the deck is to land a powerful artifact in the graveyard and cheat it back into play. There are three main targets that you may want to reanimate, namely , , and . Each has its advantages, and you actually have control over which you want to access thanks to . Engineer tutors out any artifact from the deck and places it directly into the graveyard, like an with additional utility later. Depending on the situation, you can choose the payoff that will have the most impact.
To bring those artifacts onto the battlefield you will use . It fits the curve perfectly as you can put, say, Portal into the graveyard on the second turn and reanimate it a turn later with Trash. It allows you to play quite a threatening combo-esque game. The opponent has to respect your reanimating capabilities from the earliest turns, keeping them on their toes. While afraid of Portal or Graaz, they have to fend off the pressure from , which demands an immediate answer.
On top of all of that, this is an deck. Saga gives the deck a whole new dimension of attack, since Construct tokens can frequently change the dynamic of the game. In this context, between , Blood tokens from , and Ragavan's Treasure tokens, they are pretty big. Saga can also also search for a pretty diverse suite of cards such as or to supplement the secondary plan. However, the artifact that fits the primary avenue to victory the best has to be , which is a repeatable discard outlet for when you draw the reanimation payoffs.
Do you enjoy off-meta strategies that have a strong secondary plan? Then this is the deck for you!
