Halloween Aftermath: Masks Off! Lights Up!

If you're still wondering about any of the pictures from our art trivia contest last week, this article is for you! Now we turn on the lights and reveal what cards were hiding in the darkness of the night. We also post "win rates" that indicate how easy or difficult it was to identify each image.

By the time you're reading this, our winners already have the prize money on their accounts. We also want to thank everyone, more than a thousand of you, who joined our little Halloween party. Teamwork, Dream Work

Gamers sometimes get a bit of a bad reputation for a (perceived) tendency of trying to maximize (personal) expected value. Of course many of our games are zero-sum affairs where one player has to lose for another to win, which naturally attracts and fosters a certain mindset. But this contest was not, and gamers tend to be a smart bunch. A lot of participants correctly identified that maximizing someone else's EV here didn't really affect their own EV. So we saw evidence of increasing cooperation over the course of the past week, people banding together in larger and larger groups to pool their answers. It was so sweet to see our Halloween competition turn into an actual party like that.

The Solutions, Ranked by Difficulty

Consequently we could not look at everyone's final submission to get an idea how hard it was to identify each card. Instead, the following percentages reflect how many correct answers we received within the first 250 submissions. The final percentages ended up much higher, across the board but in particular among the lowest success rates.

The 89% Question

Some people thought they saw cards like or here, but the overwhelming majority managed to settle on .

The 86% Question

Granted, you'd never be able to tell by looking at this image, but the actual name of this card is . If someone just entered here, they unambiguously identified a very different card. We still counted Big Eye as a correct answer when it came to handing out prizes, but try to be a little more careful next time.

The 85% Question

's brand recognition is quite a bit better than that of its red-eyed counterpart.

The 83% Question

Two points aren't much, but we all know that will never hear the end of it.

The 80% Question

More than any red-eye, you may have seen the pink eye of in the news lately.

The 79% Question

still proved quite easy to identify. It's almost as if we set things up so that the majority of cards could be found by a solid majority of participants. (Well, we tried, but we're honestly very relieved to see that it worked too.)

The 55% Question

Wanted dead or alive, simultaneously, it fits to find lounging about the 50% threshold.

The 45% Question

Lots of participants listed some Thousand-Eye card here, but only has seven eyes, not a thousand. (Fine, probably more on the back of its brain.)

The 43% Question

may just be the "most Halloween" card in all of Yu-Gi-Oh! history.

The 14% Question

This one was always supposed to be the killer question and closing act. What makes it particularly tough is that a casual glance at the illustration can easily misidentify the two grey bulbs to the left and right of the animal's nose as eyes. Upon closer inspection those are the flews of its snout. What makes it a true Halloween-spirited, tricky treat is that was featured in various news recently, likely seen plenty of times by plenty of people who then failed to recognize it regardless.
