Pioneer Deck of the Week: Ghalta and Mavren and Sorin

Let's begin looking ahead to the new options March of the Machine brings to the format! For starters, we cannot ignore the option to put a 12/12 onto the battlefield on turn two. Clearly someone has to build a deck around that. But beware, finding a functional shell to run the interaction isn't trivial.

We summon or on turn one. Then, on turn two, we cast , activate his −3 ability to deploy , and cross our fingers the opponent doesn't have , , et cetera. Next turn we +1 Sorin and get in with a 13/13 with trample and lifelink and deathtouch.

What if we don't draw Ghalta? Well, maybe we've drawn some other expensive Vampire to take its place. There are a bunch of people who always wanted to combine Sorin with . A second payoff may just be the final nail to pull off the coffin here. Xander will be better than Ghalta in some cases too.

What if we don't draw Sorin? Well, can do a little digging at little cost, and can do a lot of finding at a higher cost. But neither option can carry a combo that thrives not least on speed. No, we should look for alternative means to cheat a monster into play.

And we don't have to look far. plus mana Elf has long been a telltale that , , or might follow. We don't need to defy expectations and can incorporate this trio just as well. With Elf into Regisaur into Rigging hitting , we may even be able to attack for 16 on turn three! After all, Ghalta's trigger doesn't require Ghalta itself to attack and "other attacking creatures" presumably means "attacking creatures that aren't Ghalta."

Granted, compared to a dedicated Fight Rigging deck, our hits might still be weaker overall. But in return we gain a whole to cheat those hits into play, and this one can do so on turn two. Greater consistency at increased speed? Sounds like a fair tradeoff, if not downright unfair.
