For one week now we've already been getting spoiled with previews for the upcoming Lorcana set Archazia's Island. And on this Sunday Hercules finally comes home too. Thanks to Ravensburger for the opportunity for Cardmarket Insight to take part in the previews once again.

Are you as excited as we are to explore the new dual-ink cards and to try out some of the rarer ink combinations in particular? Well—we don't have one of these dual-ink cards today, but The Return of Hercules nevertheless enables some interesting combinations between Emerald and more unusual inks.

hercules

As a legendary card, The Return of Hercules is an action for Emerald that costs 5 and can also find its way into the inkwell itself. It allows each player to reveal a character card from their hand and play it for free. This is perfect to deploy characters far ahead of their "curve" and to confront opponents with huge problems. Naturally many of the characters costing 6+ ink to play bring a level of strength, willpower, and lore to the table that's tough to handle this early.

But wait!—"Each player"? So my opponents can reveal and play a character too? This downside does weigh too heavily, doesn't it? Well, one of the defining features of Emerald is to make the opponent discard. So my competition either will have no cards to play anymore or will make sure to keep cards in hand that they can play before losing them to discard. The danger of running into characters "far ahead of the ink curve" is minimized considerably this way.

Let's look at a few characters that are interesting to play off The Return of Hercules. In Emerald itself Clarabelle - Light on Her Hooves looks appealing. She could be played via shift 5 on the same turn, but often there won't be a little Clarabelle on the field. Still, you'll hardly want to run Clarabelle alongside discard because this negates her biggest upside.

Steel

goofy simba

The arguably most successful ink combination with Emerald—a Challenge champion no less—is the most typical home for a discard theme. Though "just" a vanilla character—meaning without ability text—Goofy - Knight for a Day comes with 10 strength and willpower each and quests for 4 lore. Simba - Fighting Prince comes to 5/7 and immediately deals 2 damage to a character of your choice when played (or improves your hand). Namaari - Resolute Daughter quests for 3 lore and also adds resist +3 to her 5 willpower.

Amethyst

Elsa Olaf

This popular (and successful) ink combination offers Elsa - Spirit of Winter, who can come down a full three turns earlier. Additionally Elsa can exert the character the opponent plays right away. Olaf - Happy Passenger is a whole 4 ink above the curve and comes with 6/6, 3 lore, and evasive. 1 ink and 1 lore higher still sits Rafiki - Ethereal Guide, and he makes you draw a card for each card moving to your inkwell.

Amber

Perdi Pluto

Famous for aggro, rush, and tempo, expensive characters are more of an exception here. There's Perdita - Devoted Mother, who isn't just above the curve but also brings along another character from the discard pile. Pluto - Determined Defender comes as a bodyguard two turns earlier and with an impressive willpower of 8. Wreck‐It Ralph - Admiral Underpants gets a character card from the discard pile as well—albeit only to your hand. On the plus side, he can boast a sizable board presence at strength 6 and willpower 7.

Ruby

Malefiz Tremaine

Will the new Queen of Hearts and Mad Hatter—both dual-ink cards—make the combination of Emerald and Ruby viable? Well, at least removal looks easier than ever. For example Maleficent - Monstrous Dragon can take out the character the opponent plays right away—provided there's no ward. Lady Tremaine - Imperious Queen similarly banishes an opposing character—and because the opponent picks, even those with ward aren't safe. Popular in Ruby is Scar - Vicious Cheater, who can rush into a challenge immediately and is often used to clear the opponent's board within one turn. Sisu - Empowered Sibling directly banishes all opposing characters with strength 2 or less.

Sapphire

Tamatoa John Silver

Emerald and Sapphire? Rather unusual too so far. Sapphire's "ramp" identity—meaning accelerated filling of the inkwell—allows you to play "above the curve" already anyway. The Return of Hercules now makes it even easier to deploy big characters early. Playing Tamatoa - So Shiny! for a mere 5 ink and getting an item back from the discard pile sounds quite appealing, doesn't it? "Just" another vanilla character, John Silver - Terror of the Realm at least gives us 8/8 and quests for 3. And for a whopping 4 quests Sheriff of Nottingham - Bushel Britches—with support to boot.

We're counting the days until March 7, 2025, when players can join the fun at local game stores everywhere. This is when we set sail for Archazia's Island and get to enjoy the fresh breeze bringing new momentum to the ink combination carousel!
