I just got back from the second European "Disney Lorcana Challenge" in Bochum, when I found the preview card for Shimmering Skies in my email inbox. And hello! Bucky - Squirrel Squeak Tutor had been everywhere in Bochum, and now I had just the answer for him in front of my eyes. I had the full article worked out in my mind within the hour …

… and then we got the errata news on Wednesday evening. Admittedly, on one hand, I was sad I needed to scrap the world's best preview article now. On the other hand, as a player, I was quite grateful to Ravensburger for weakening Bucky so that the least fun deck of all times could not be played in its original form anymore.

However, even if Bucky may no longer prove a threat, Emerald still possesses a shed full of tools to make you discard cards from your hand. It isn't the mechanic itself that's a killjoy, after all—just the way the squirrel enabled it. And that brings us to today's preview card:

magica

So Magica De Spell is an Amethyst card that costs 4 ink to play and that can itself find the way into your inkwell as a resource. Magica comes with a strength of 2 and a willpower of 5, and you gain 1 lore when you quest with her. And as long as she's in play, her ability "Playing with power" prevents you from having to discard cards during an opponent's turn.

Even though turn four is heavily contested in current Amethyst decks, between Merlin - Rabbit, Merlin - Goat, and The Queen's Castle - Mirror Chamber, with Ruby adding Be King Undisputed or Steel adding And Then Along Came Zeus, it should be easy to integrate Magica as well.

In particular against Emerald, whose central mechanic is the discarding of cards from opponents' hands, Magica can shine or—rare for a witch—sparkle. Ursula - Deceiver may still allow your opponent a peek at your hand, but important cards like Be Prepared or Friends on the Other Side are protected from the discard. Hypnotize may hand your opponent a card, but yours remain safe in your hand.

The discard effects of Sudden Chill, Daisy Duck - Secret Agent, Friar Tuck - Priest of Nottingham, Lucifer - Cunning Cat, and Jasmine - Desert Warrior likewise grasp at nothing.

Magica further takes Prince John - Greediest of All out of the picture completely. As long as you're not discarding cards, no one will draw cards off the popular ward character either.

The song action We Don't Talk About Bruno alone may remain as the biggest threat out of Emerald then. When this returns Magica to your hand, the discard is no longer prevented as the witch's power works no more.

Amber too offers a host of cards against which Magica will be able to protect you in the future. Similar to Emerald's Ursula, The Bare Necessities or a quest with Ursula - Eric's Bride grants your opponent a full view of your hand, but even your non-character cards are safe! Daisy Duck - Musketeer Spy or You Have Forgotten Me go nowhere either.

In the cooperative adventure against Ursula (Illumineer's Quest: Deep Trouble) and her minions, Magica will be able to protect you against Entangling Magic.

Last but not least, there's Steel. Your opponents will now think twice before they play A Whole New World against your Magica and full grip. You'd just draw seven extra cards then without discarding a single of your current cards. What a terrific deal, thanks!

In conclusion, I'd like to give a big thanks again to Ravensburger, who came through on short notice and made it possible for Cardmarket to preview a card from the upcoming set—and possible for me to have a lot of fun again while writing this article. I hope the Lorcana community will have just as much fun playing with Magica De Spell - Cruel Sorceress and with all the other new cards from Shimmering Skies!
