Ever since the first announcement early last year, people have been looking forward to this character. With the release of the upcoming set Winterspell he will now be available—at your local game store from February 13 on and everwhere one week later: "Darkwing Duck, the terror of villains" joins Lorcana as a theme! And once again, we'd like to thank Ravensburger for giving Cardmarket the opportunity to join in on the preview fun for Lorcana's eleventh set.

"I am the terror that flaps in the night …"

My recollection of the early 1990s is hazy, but I still remember getting my first Donald Duck pocket books and watching the cartoon shows from Duckburg on the Disney Club on TV. The thing I recall the best are the adventures of Darkwing Duck. Endearingly clumsy and confused, this super-hero duck was often his own worst enemy. And although he always declined the help his friends offered, it regularly was this help that secured his triumphs over a number of various villains.

"Let's get dangerous!"

This time we get to preview Darkwing's Chair Set, a rare Sapphire item. We can play it for 3 ink but cannot put it into our inkwell itself. However, when we play this item, we can put the top card of our deck into our inkwell facedown and exerted. And as soon as the Chair Set is in play, we can exert and banish it to remove 2 damage from a character—or 4 if the character is "Darkwing Duck."

"… I am the bubble gum that, uh, clings to your shoe!"

The ability on play perfectly matches Sapphire's main identity. Normally a player's inkwell can only grow by 1 every turn. "Ramp," however, generates resources at a faster pace, allowing us to play more costly cards far earlier than would otherwise be possible.

By "ramping" players effectively aim to skip over an early turn and jump ahead to a later turn: , , or enable this on turn two, even at the "loss" of an extra card in the case of Tipo. allows "ramping" with 3 ink and does it with 4. And there are plenty more Sapphire cards that guarantee an expedited ink development and ensure that we'll always have enough resources to play actions, characters, and items or to use abilities.

"… I am the spinach that sticks to your teeth!"

Since the rotation, Sapphire decks—regardless of their other ink—are not exactly known to run many items anymore. The loss of , , , or without any adequate replacements has robbed the blue ink of its second identity. Items with strong abilities, and especially interactions and synergies with characters like , , , or , are largely absent from the current meta.

"… I am the ghost of a chance that you don't have!"

It's even more reason to hope that this archetype finds its way back to enrich Lorcana's deck variety again! Without additional information on Winterspell and sets further into the future, it remains dubious if Darkwing's Chair Set alone will be able to ring in a renaissance here. The card surely opens up possibilities of skipping past turns other than three or five. But we still lack more strong effects on items and especially the interactions and synergies with playable characters. The Chairs' second ability looks rather modest at first glance too. How about characters with powerful abilities that trigger when we remove damage from them? One could imagine, for example, something like: "Return an item card from your discard to your hand."/"Put an item card from your discard into your inkwell facedown and exerted."/"Deal damage to a character equal to the damage removed."

We can be excited to see what the release of Winterspell brings for this and many other reasons. Aside from the arrival of Darkwing Duck, we can look forward to glimmers from Disney's Christmas Carol and new characters from the Stitch universe. In just three weeks, you can try out the new cards yourself at one of the many prerelease events at local game stores everywhere. We can't wait!
